About National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, which was started in 1969. NSS is a voluntary program for higher education students, focusing on their personality and character development through community service. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands-on experience to young students in delivering community services and transforming them into responsible citizens. Embracing the ethos of “NOT ME BUT YOU,” the program encourages a spirit of social responsibility.
NSS Cell at Birla Global University
The NSS cell at Birla Global University (BGU) offers the NSS program promoting self-reliance and holistic student development, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s focus on experiential learning. Guided by faculty, NSS volunteers engage in community outreach to understand socio-economic and environmental issues at both local and global levels.
The cell’s Its initiatives aim to address community needs and shape socially conscious, forward-thinking citizens through nation-building activities and skill development. The program reflects BGU’s core values—Honesty, Empathy, Transparency, Freedom, Respect, and Collaboration—while supporting various UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Volunteers acquire life skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Their interactions with diverse groups foster empathy, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity, contributing to personal growth and enhancing employability.
Vision and Mission of the NSS Cell
The NSS cell at Birla Global University (BGU) envisions to motivate students to transform into a sect of progressive citizens through the NSS program by indulging them in nation-building activities and developing social and humanitarian skills. The program functions with a mission to encourage diversity and inclusiveness with the following objectives by undertaking the University’s core values as Honesty & Integrity, Empathy, Transparency, Freedom, Respect, and Collaboration.
NSS Program Objectives
In coordination with mentors, advisors, and other intellects at BGU, student volunteers plan, execute and manage different activities through events and projects to address various community issues. They disseminate their concerns and care to mitigate their socially responsible behaviour by benefiting people in and around BGU Bhubaneswar.
Administrative Structure of NSS Cell
The NSS cell of BGU is governed by the NSS committee constituting faculty and student members. Besides, the advisory members to the NSS cell constitute the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, and the Deans of Different Schools of the University, and experts from academia, government, industry, and civil societies. Presently the NSS cell is administered and managed by the following team.
