The Pro Bono Club

The Pro Bono Club at Birla School of Law (BSOL) is an initiative under the aegis of Department of Justice, Government of India, aimed at promoting legal awareness, social justice, and community engagement. Established with the vision of fostering a sense of responsibility and service among law students, the club actively organizes a wide range of activities that focus on educating the public about their legal rights and duties. Through workshops, outreach programs, competitions, and collaborations with legal bodies, the Pro Bono Club strives to bridge the gap between legal education and real-world application, empowering both students and communities.

Legal Education and Awareness

The Pro Bono Club has consistently focused on educating students and the public on constitutional values, legal rights, and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

  • Visit to National Lok Adalat (September 9, 2023): Students visited the National Lok Adalat in Cuttack to observe the functioning of Lok Adalats, which provide an accessible means of justice through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
  • Release of Nyaya Bandu Newsletter (September 12, 2023): The club launched a newsletter documenting its activities, showcasing its commitment to legal awareness and justice outreach.   • Pro Bono Training Session on Mediation (September 17, 2023): A training session on recent trends in mediation provided students with practical insights into ADR, aligning with the Department of Justice’s directives.
  • Celebration of Constitution Day (November 26, 2024): The club organized an essay competition and poster-making competition to encourage students to reflect on the Constitution’s core values, balancing rights and duties in a democratic society.
  • Legal Drafting Competition (February 15, 2025): This event helped students hone essential legal drafting skills, enhancing their practical legal training by engaging in a real-world case scenario.

Human Rights and Social Justice Advocacy

The club organized multiple events to promote awareness and understanding of human rights, social justice, and the challenges faced by marginalized communities.

  • Celebration of Human Rights Day (December 10, 2023): The club hosted an Extempore Competition, where students spoke on critical human rights issues such as gender equality, disability rights, and refugee rights.
  • Celebration of International Men’s Day (November 19, 2024): Through poetry competitions, discussions, and video production, the club focused on highlighting positive male role models and the importance of mental health, social expectations, and gender equality.
  • Celebration of Women’s Day Week (March 2-8, 2024): The club celebrated gender equality through activities like photography competitions, innovation challenges, panel discussions, and interactions with women in local communities, promoting the values of empowerment and equality.
  • Awareness Session on National Children’s Day (November 14, 2024): The club organized an event for children, focusing on children’s rights and spreading joy through small gestures, such as distributing flyers and gifts.

Community Engagement and Outreach

The Pro Bono Club remained dedicated to fostering a stronger connection between the university and the broader community, raising awareness about fundamental rights, legal literacy, and social inclusion.

  • Field Visit to Tribal Village (January 31, 2025): Students visited a tribal village to distribute pamphlets informing the local community about their fundamental rights, empowering them with the knowledge needed to protect themselves against exploitation.
  • Independence Day Celebration (August 15, 2024): The club visited a nearby village to discuss fundamental rights, engaging with the local community and helping them understand their rights and responsibilities in the context of freedom and independence.
  • Awareness Session on Unity in Diversity (July 31, 2024): The club conducted a session at a government primary school, teaching children the importance of unity amidst diversity, complemented by a poster-making competition.

Promoting Legal Competitions and Skills Development

The Pro Bono Club organized various competitions and training sessions aimed at enhancing students’ legal skills, preparing them for professional legal practice.

  • State Mediation Competition (September 12-13, 2024): The club, in collaboration with the ADR Committee, organized the first State Mediation Competition in Odisha, where students from various institutions participated, emphasizing the importance of ADR in legal practice.
  • Competitions: The club hosted multiple competitions such as the Slogan competition, Poetry Competition on International Men’s Day (November 19, 2024), an essay writing competition on Constitution Day (November 26, 2024), poster making competition and essay competition to commemorate Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary (April 14, 2024).

The Pro Bono Club also organized visits and collaborative events to strengthen partnerships with judicial bodies and expand students’ understanding of the legal system.

  • Visit to National Company Law Tribunal and State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (April 18, 2024): The students visited these bodies to gain practical insights into corporate law and consumer rights.
  • Visit to National Lok Adalat (September 14, 2024): The club organized a visit to the Lok Adalat in Cuttack, enabling students to observe real-time legal proceedings and learn from judges about the significance of ADR in promoting access to justice.
  • The Pro Bono Club at Birla School of Law has made remarkable strides in creating a socially conscious and law-literate student community. Through its various activities including competitions, awareness campaigns, field visits, and collaborations with legal institutions the club has played a pivotal role in shaping students’ understanding of the legal system, human rights, and social justice.
